Book Two of the four-volume The Death of the American Dream covers 1990 to 2008. It's on preorder now as an EPUB ebook and releases Sat., Oct. 31.

If you were born in the 1980s, Book Two is the country you grew up in. Revolution runs 31 chapters in three Parts:

  • The Republican Revolution (1990–1996)

  • The Lull and the Turn (1997–2000)

  • The War on Terror (2001–2008)

It follows the coalition from Book One into power, and into the companies that decide what Americans see and hear.

What's inside

  • Rage. The underground before Ruby Ridge; Ruby Ridge and Waco; and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, timed for the second anniversary of the fire that ended the Waco siege.

  • Power. 1994 and the "Republican Revolution," Speaker's rule, welfare reform, NAFTA, and the drug war and the carceral state.

  • The machine. The 1996 Telecommunications Act lifted the national radio cap, and Section 230 sat inside the same law. Fox News Channel launched on Oct. 7, 1996, under Roger Ailes. "The Merger Decade" traces the studios, networks and labels that consolidated from 1993 to 2013.

  • The turn. Kyoto and the birth of climate denial, Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr., and the 2000 election and Bush v. Gore.

  • The war on terror. 9/11 and the PATRIOT Act, the Iraq War and the neoconservative-evangelical alliance, the Bush tax cuts, the China shock, and Hurricane Katrina.

Close to home

"St. Petersburg in the 1990s: The Stadium and the Uprising" (Chapter 70) covers the city that built a stadium and the night St. Petersburg police killed TyRon Lewis in October 1996.

The line to remember

Chapter 73, "What the 1990s Built," looks at three laws of the decade:

  • Prevention Through Deterrence

  • Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act

  • the 1996 immigration law's expedited removal

It says they "each named no group, and each reached particular people, some of them decades later."

Who it's for

Revolution is for anyone who wants to know:

  • why the news sounds the way it does, and who decided that

  • why the laws that matter most rarely say who they're aimed at
