Opinion | Four Days After the Wipeout, Trump Is Swinging at Everyone

Fox News, gas prices, the stock market, the voters, Elissa Slotkin and now the Justice Department. Since Tuesday, the president has had a target for every day of the week.

A quick word before we start. Since Tuesday, at least two fake "Trump meltdown" screenshots have gone viral, one about "consequences" and one about "witchcraft." Snopes and Lead Stories checked them. Both are fake.

We didn't use either one. We didn't need to. Everything below is a real post or a real statement, and every one is linked.

Tuesday night into Wednesday: it was everyone's fault

As Democrats took the House and the Senate, the president's first instinct was to take himself off the scoreboard. "I wasn't on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!" he wrote, The Hollywood Reporter noted.

Then he turned on his favorite network. Fox News "bears responsibility for these losses," he posted, according to Newsweek.

He also posted a red "VETO" hat. He told Fox it wasn't the Iran war that cost Republicans, it was gas prices, NewsNation reported. Diesel was averaging $6.35.

Thursday: the market fell, and that's on you

Wall Street rose Wednesday, and Trump took the credit. On Thursday the Dow closed down 1,833 points, The Hill reported.

His reading: "The Stock Market crashed today because the Dumocrats had a big Tuesday — So sad to see, you only have yourselves to blame!"

"You" is the voters. He followed with a promise that the country would be bigger and stronger "one way or the other." That evening he posted, in all capitals, that he just wasn't on the ballot, per the Trump's Truth archive.

Friday: Mr. Veto and Mr. Miller

Friday morning, he called superintelligence "GOLD" and said only "foolish leadership" would turn down data centers. Hours later he posted that Israel and the Middle East "WOULD NOT EXIST TODAY" without him.

Then came the real news. He made Stephen Miller White House chief of staff and moved Susie Wiles out, as FMNN reported. CBS reported he is weighing Gov. Ron DeSantis to replace Pete Hegseth, as FMNN covered.

At 10:11 p.m., he posted a black-and-white photo captioned "MR. VETO."

Saturday: the Justice Department and the octagon

Saturday morning he reposted charts showing that presidents usually lose House seats in midterms. Fair enough. That's true, and it's the most honest thing he posted all week.

Then, at 12:45 p.m., he told the Justice Department to "look into" the Democrats preparing to investigate his administration. He called it "extortion at the highest level" and wrote that "the imprisonment should be against these EXTORTIONISTS," according to the archive.

He claimed Sen. Elissa Slotkin wants to "go after all young people that believe in Republican Values." She said nothing of the kind. She said people who help steal taxpayer money should be held accountable, as she put it in October.

At 1:40 p.m., he offered the White House press secretary job to Dana White, the man who runs the UFC, calling him "a violent Fighter and Warrior." He asked White to bring UFC fighters as assistants "to defend us against the Lunatic Left," the archive shows. The podium has been empty since Oct. 16, when his last pick lasted four days, CNBC reported.

Five minutes later, he was back on the Democrats. He asked people to report their "threats" to the Justice Department, or "directly to me, your President." Then: "These SLEAZEBAGS should go to jail for what they are doing," he wrote.

What his defenders will say

Trump's allies will say he's entitled to vent, and he is. They'll say "look into" isn't an indictment. They'll point out that Slotkin really did say she wanted prosecutions to make young people think twice about working for this administration, and that a 182-page Democratic investigation plan names companies and donors, not just officials.

Those are real arguments. Here's the problem with them.

Congress investigating the executive branch isn't extortion. It's the job. The Supreme Court said so in McGrain v. Daugherty nearly a century ago. A letter asking a company to keep records and cooperate is not a threat to take its money.

And the Justice Department isn't his to aim. The department's own policy bars investigations based only on protected speech, former U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade has noted. Slotkin is already under federal investigation for a video telling troops not to follow illegal orders. In October, he said she should be tried in court.

A president asking citizens to send complaints about his opponents "directly to me" isn't venting. It's building a list.

That's the part that should worry Florida. Before he fired Tampa's own Pam Bondi as attorney general in April, Trump had grown frustrated that she wasn't going after his opponents hard enough, NewsNation reported. Her replacement is his former personal lawyer. Saturday he handed that lawyer a list.

The message he keeps missing

Voters sent a clear message on Tuesday. In four days, the president has answered Fox News, Jessica Tarlov, gas prices, the stock market, the voters, Democrats, Slotkin and the press corps.

He has not answered the voters' actual question: why things cost too much and why the people around him keep getting richer.

Democrats get the gavels in January. The record will be there waiting. So will we.
